Long before the first prayer begins, the journey has already started. Every year, millions of Muslims from every corner of Bangladesh, along with pilgrims from across the world, travel to Tongi to take part in Bishwa Ijtema, one of the largest peaceful religious gatherings on Earth. Their paths converge by train, bus, boat, and on foot, united by a shared purpose of faith, reflection, and devotion.
The gathering transforms the banks of the Turag River into a vast sea of humanity. Elderly pilgrims, families, students, labourers, and religious scholars pray shoulder to shoulder, sharing meals, stories, and moments of quiet contemplation. Differences of wealth, status, and nationality disappear as millions come together in pursuit of the same spiritual journey.
Beyond the prayer grounds, another story unfolds. Overcrowded trains packed beyond capacity, highways filled with streams of pilgrims, and volunteers working tirelessly to guide and care for the faithful reveal the immense scale of the event.
